Say Goodbye to Joomla 1.6

As you may know from our recent articles Joomla 1.6 will reach the end of its life soon. So, all Joomla users whose websites and blogs are powered by Joomla (Version 1.6) must upgrade to 1.7.0. Ideally the update process should take place before August 19th, 2011.

It’s really essential for anyone to switch to Joomla 1.7.0, or else your Joomla site may be hacked due to the vulnerability of Joomla 1.6 and no one can fix it for you. To avoid this situation you should follow some simple steps and upgrade your site to Joomla 1.7.0. However, before doing this please perform a backup because without a good backup you may need to rebuild the site from scratch.

Please visit Joomla.org to learn why it is so important to update your Joomla 1.6 site to Joomla 1.7 and how to do it in the most effective and easy way.

But you must act fast, because Joomla 1.6 will not be supported after August 19th, 2011 and you’d better take care about the security of your Joomla site now.

Joomla 1.6.6 is Available

Now you can download Joomla 1.6.6. This is a security release and it’s meant for those users who can’t use Joomla 1.7.0. However, you should know that Joomla 1.6.6 will not be in use after 19 August 2011, so you will have upgrade to Joomla 1.7.0 before this date.

Actually, you can either upgrade from Joomla! 1.5.x to Joomla 1.6.6 or you can upgrade to Joomla 1.7.0, but the most important is that you switch to Joomla 1.7.0 before August 19, 2011.

Also, if you find any bug in Joomla, please report it on the Joomla bug tracker.

Joomla 1.7.0 is Launched

Finally, the Joomla project announced a highly anticipated release of Joomla 1.7.0! As it’s a security release, you’re welcome to download Joomla 1.7.0 and see it in action, but be sure to backup your site before upgrading.

Please keep in mind, since the advent of Joomla 1.7.0 the previous version of the Joomla CMS (Joomla 1.6.5) will soon be out of use. Therefore, you’d better update to version 1.7.0 before August 19, 2011. If you’d like to do it now, then feel free to visit Joomla.org and find instructions on how to install Joomla 1.7.0 or how to upgrade from Joomla 1.6 to Joomla 1.7.0.

Why Don’t You Test Joomla 1.7 RC1?

The Joomla team has just released Joomla 1.7 RC1. This means you can download the latest version of the Joomla CMS and start testing it right now. Also, this release is to show that the final release of the Joomla 1.7 is coming. And the last, as soon as you download Joomla 1.7 RC1 you can see what it takes to upgrade from version 1.6.5 to 1.7.0.

For more information about Joomla 1.7 RC1, please visit the official Joomla site. There you’ll also read about the newest improvements that have been made to the Joomla content management system and will find a link to download Joomla 1.7 RC1.

Please remember Joomla 1.7 RC1 is available for testing purposes only. You should not use it on production sites.

Check Out the Latest Releases of the Joomla CMS

Each day brings good news to the Joomla community. On June 27th the Joomla 1.6.4 was released and next day, on June 28th, the Joomla developers announced the availability of the Joomla 1.7 Beta 1. Whether you’d like to download one version or another, please visit Joomla.com.

Although, it may seem strange to offer one version of Joomla just after another, there are some explanations for this. The version 1.6.4 is released to fix the issues that users face with the previous versions of the Joomla content management system and the main aims of introducing Joomla 1.7 Beta 1 are the following: 1. to test Joomla 1.7 and see if there are any bugs that should be fixed before the final release; 2. to inform Joomla users of the upcoming launch of the Joomla 1.7; 3. to allow a trial upgrade from version 1.6.4 to 1.7.0.

And the last thing to mention, both releases of the Joomla CMS are secure and you’re welcome to download the one you think you need more.

Want to Test Joomla! 1.7?

Although Joomla 1.6 has been launched not long ago, the Joomla team is already working on Joomla! 1.7. Moreover, with the final release of Joomla! 1.7 around the corner, things are getting more exciting. Joomla! 1.7 Alpha is now available so that you can test Joomla! 1.7 before the fast approaching official release.

Please keep in mind the alpha version of Joomla 1.7 is to be used for testing only. It means you should not use it on live websites. By testing Joomla! 1.7 Alpha you help developers find the bugs and fix them as soon as possible. In other way, you help the secure release of Joomla! 1.7 to be finally launched.

Here are some tips that will help you identify whether the site you’re in is built with Joomla or not.

  • Check example.com/admin/ or example.com/index.php/admin/
  • If you’re using Google Chrome as your browser there’s a plugin that detects web frameworks and JavaScript libraries that run on the website that you are browsing. The plugin is called Chrome Sniffer.
  • And the easiest way – try BuiltWith.com. As you may guess from its name, this tool helps you find out what a website is built with. Simply enter the URL of the website and see if it’s built with the Joomla Content Management system or not. Moreover, you’ll get information about the Server, Frameworks, JavaScript Libraries and eCommerce tools that are used on the site you’re checking.

There are thousands and thousands of sites on the net and now you know how to learn which of them are Joomla sites.

Joomla 1.6.2 Released

The Joomla Team has announced the availability of Joomla 1.6.2. This is a security release and Joomla users are recommended to upgrade their sites and blogs. However, Joomla users should always backup their sites before upgrading.

To improve the performance and efficiancy of Joomla websites the latest version of the Joomla CMS includes a number of features and enhancements. For instance, changes have been made to such categories as Administration, Code Style, Components, Database, Installation, Joomla! Libraries, Languages, Modules, Plugins, User Interface, etc. The detailed list of changes is available on the official website of the Joomla CMS.
