Yesterday the Joomla project announced the availability of Joomla 2.5.0. This is a security release. So you should have no worries when you upgrade your Joomla site.

Actually, Joomla 2.5 is another milestone in the development of the Joomla CMS and it is marked by dramatical changes. For instance, it’s for the first time that the Joomla CMS includes multi-database support with the addition of Microsoft SQL Server. Other versions of Joomla that were released before were only compatible with MySQL databases. Also, when logged into the control panel Joomla users will be notified each time a new release of Joomla or a new Joomla extension is available. For a detailed list of features that will come with Joomla 2.5, please read the following article

If for some reasons you are unable to update to version 2.5.0, feel free to download Joomla 1.7.4, but please rememeber that Joomla 1.7 will not be supported after February 24th, 2012.

All who are using Joomla as a platform for their websites are welcome to upgrade to Joomla 2.5.0 or Joomla 1.7.4 depending on their needs, because the power and security of Joomla increase with each new release.

Congratulations to the Joomla Project for winning the Packt Open Source CMS Award this November. We believe this win should be shared between those who developed Joomla, those who update it with new features and those who use Joomla every day.

The Open Source Awards is a contest that aims to encourage, support, recognize and reward Open Source projects. Formerly the Open Source CMS Award, the contest has been running since 2006 and is regarded as one of the most established platforms for recognizing excellence amongst Open Source Software. Prize money given out since 2006 tops $100,000.”

This year the public and the judges had to choose winners in the following categories: Open Source CMS, Open Source Mobile Toolkits and Libraries, Most Promising Open Source Project, Open Source Business Applications, Open Source JavaScript Libraries and Open Source Multimedia Software. So, Joomla was announced the winner in the Open Source CMS category and we believe it is a well-deserved recognition for the most trusted content managegent system that powers millions of websites all over the net.

It’s the third time Joomla wins the Packt Open Source CMS Award and this proves that the reward is not accidental, but a result of continuous improvements being made by the Joomla team and Joomla enthusiasts.

As you may know from our recent articles Joomla 1.6 will reach the end of its life soon. So, all Joomla users whose websites and blogs are powered by Joomla (Version 1.6) must upgrade to 1.7.0. Ideally the update process should take place before August 19th, 2011.

It’s really essential for anyone to switch to Joomla 1.7.0, or else your Joomla site may be hacked due to the vulnerability of Joomla 1.6 and no one can fix it for you. To avoid this situation you should follow some simple steps and upgrade your site to Joomla 1.7.0. However, before doing this please perform a backup because without a good backup you may need to rebuild the site from scratch.

Please visit Joomla.org to learn why it is so important to update your Joomla 1.6 site to Joomla 1.7 and how to do it in the most effective and easy way.

But you must act fast, because Joomla 1.6 will not be supported after August 19th, 2011 and you’d better take care about the security of your Joomla site now.
